By 1590, six decades after the arrival of Pizarro, the population of the Inca empire had been reduced by more than 80 percent, in large part due to the ravages caused by diseases brought by Europeans and in part by the conditions of enslavement in gold and silver mines to which the indigenous population was subjected.
